Somaliland businessmen using the port of Berbera have stated their frustrations over the increased taxation imposed on them by the government and at the same time threatening to stop using the port of Berbera facility if actions .
Mr. Mohamed Shukri Jama, the chairman of Somaliland chamber of commerce and prominent businessmen headquarters during a press conference held at the chamber of commerce headquarters stated their frustrations proposals by port authorities to impose new taxes on all container cargo at Berbera Port, Somaliland main port.
The businessmen of who oppose the new taxes said that it will hike import prices and increase on all consumer make the country’s port less competitive.
It’s the first time the port of Berbera has increased taxation on containers. The new tax for 40 feet container will now be charged the amount SLSH 5, 400,000 instead of the previous the SLSH3, 000,000.
Mr. Ali Omer Mohamed, “Ali Xor Xor” the Managing director of Berbera port was not available for comment at the time of reporting.
