The Head of DFID Somalia, Phil Evans, visited Hargeisa last week, where he met Somaliland President Muse Bihi and key development partners working to promote long-term economic growth in Somaliland.
He discussed the successes of the UK supported Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) which works in partnership with the Somaliland authorities to improve the lives of Somalilanders by building critical infrastructure like roads, water systems and agricultural facilities, and building the core capacity of Somaliland’s institutions.
At Berbera, Phil saw the impressive expansion of the port facilities and explored with key stakeholders what more can be done along the Berbera Corridor to improve infrastructure, create jobs, promote trade and boost local economies.
On the outskirts of Hargeisa, Phil observed the Somaliland Mine Action Department’s deminers in action, working together with The HALO Trust to clear a legacy minefield so surrounding communities can live safely.
The UK is one of the largest donors to mine action in Somaliland. Through our Global Mine Action Programme UKaid will clear over 12 million square meters of contaminated land and provide mine risk education to over 39,000 people in Somalia, including Somaliland, between 2016-2020.
