Commemoration of 8th March: End Gender Based Violence in Somaliland
Every year the International Women’s Day is commemorated across the world on 8th March. Women in Somaliland are not celebrating for victory. Many impediments are hampering women to exercise fundamental freedoms and rights granted to them by Somaliland constitution and international human rights instruments.
Women are suffering female gentile mutilation, domestic violence, rape and other forms of violence. “Human Rights Centre urges the government of Somaliland to fight gender based violence and gender inequality” says Guleid Ahmed Jama, HRC chairperson. “The clan leaders continue to obstruct justice for victims of gender based violence. They shall not be allowed to interfere in criminal proceedings against perpetrators of gender based violence” he adds.
The theme for the International Women’s Day 2015 is “Empowering Women-Empowering Humanity: Picture it”. Human Rights Center calls on the political parties, the parliament and the government to increase women’s political participation. Women are underrepresented in all ranks of public offices and private employment.
