The Somaliland Ministry of Transport and Road Development held a well-attended ceremony on Saturday for the launching of Speed governor equipment to be installed in motor vehicles.
The inauguration ceremony of the equipment was attended by Vice President of the Republic of Somaliland H.E Abdurrahman Abdallah Ismail (Saylici) was held at the Ministry of Transportation and Road Development.
The device will be connected vehicles cross-country with the purpose of minimize the impact of accidents.
The event was attended by government officials, representatives of the various transport companies, members of the public and road safety forces.
Vice President of the Republic of Somaliland H.E Abdurrahman Abdallah Ismail (Saylici) speaking on the importance of the equipment said, “The main purpose of all of this is for the safety and well-being of the lives of the people, and all over the world rules and regulations have been put in place in order to save people’s lives so as to avoid accident due to negligence, it is important for us today to take that responsibility and get people ready, and we must stand together as a government, as a company, and as a driver to take responsibility, so I call on the public to accept the system set by the ministry. ”.
Speaking at the event, Somaliland’s Minister of Transport and Road Development Abdallahi Abokor Osman said that the purpose of the tool is to achieve the goal of “speed limits” but the ultimate goal is a reduction in the number of road accidents and casualties and as the director-general said earlier the study that we conducted the 2018 traffic accidents established that the three main cause are the unroadworthy motor vehicles, driver and bad roads.
“Therefore we shall be the second country in East Africa to adopt and operate this system, and we are fortunate today. Ethiopia, which you know is the most developed country ahead of us, it is our honor that today we are the second East African country to introduce speed governors to vehicles using our roads and I appeal to all motor vehicles owners to install the equipment in the vehicles within the next three months and should get the new license, not the old one. Lastly, I would like to thank GTS and Infinity for helping in implementing and being part of this process”, he said.
The director-general of the Ministry of Transport and Road Development Omar Abdullahi Adan (Omar-Sayid) in his opening speech at the opening ceremony said, “The Ministry of Transport and Roads Development Authority is responsible for the provision of national transport services such as public transport and goods reach their destination safe and sound, and as you’re well aware of many accidents have occurred in our roads thence the ministry resolve to introduce measures to counter such accidents by introducing speed limit equipment.
Minister of Finance Dr. Saad Ali Shire and minister of sports Hon Boss Mire Mohamed speaking at the event addressed the importance of speed equipment in the country.
Officials include the head of road safety police in the eastern part of the city of Hargeisa Captain Sugule, Ms. Yusur Abraar , the managing director of Horn of Africa Insurance Company, deputy governor of Marodijeh region, Mr. Abdiweli Abdirahman, Hon Obama and MP, Mr. Mohamed Ali Bile, the Director-General at the Presidency all reiterated the importance of safety in our roads and protection for the people lives while speaking at the ceremony.
Lastly, the Presidential advisor on technology and GTS were awarded certificates of appreciation by the Ministry of Transport and Roads Development.
