Mr. Abdiqani Yusuf Galaydh, the director of the meteorological department in the Somaliland Ministry of Agriculture called on residents in Sool and Sanaag regions to be alert to the heavy rains are expected in the coming days.
Mr. Abdiqani Yusuf Galaydh who spoke to the media yesterday said that over the next 24 to 72 hours, there is a high possibility of heavy rains in Sool, Sanag, and parts of Togdheer regions and he urged the people of the region to beware of flooding. He urged people living in low lying areas to be vigilant of flash floods.
According to the alert, moderate to heavy rain’s are likely to cause flash floods in some regions, including Sahil, Selel, Togdheer, Sool and Sanaag, starting on Friday.
Somaliland coast guards have also issued similar alerts to people living in coastal areas on Friday morning.
The influence of PAWAN may start being felt in the coastal areas in the next 12 hours where moderate to heavy rains and strong winds are expected. The rains will then spread further inland to many areas within Somaliland, Puntland and central regions on 07 and 08 December 2019.
The storm poses an immediate threat to the shipping lane that links Somalia and Gulf states. Other impacts expected include the destruction of property and infrastructure including roads, buildings, and boats due to the strong winds. Flash floods may also disrupt normal activities along the tropical storm path. Communities living along these areas are advised to take necessary precautions.
