Somaliland Upper House of Parliament (Guurti) has passed a bill to increase the president’s term of office by two years. The motion for the increase of the president’s term of office was been tabled by the speaker of the senate Hon. Suleiman Mohamoud Adam.
The speaker of the senate confirmed that the country was facing many challenges that need to be put into consideration. He said the recurring drought and economic slowdown caused by Covid 19 has depleted national resources hence the need for the continuation of government.
The senate increased the president’s term by two years.
In another development, the senate also passed a bill to increase their term of office by 5 years, thus one year after the expiry of that of the lower house of representatives, in accordance with the constitution.
