Hargeisa-Minister of Employment, Social and Family Affair, Hon Hinda Jama Hersi Gani announced that the government has plans to find alternative accommodation to the homeless and rough sleepers in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Hon Hinda Jama Hersi Gani said that this approach aims to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on people facing homelessness such as street children, mentally ill persons and beggars by providing them with emergency accommodations in areas designated by the ministry during this public health emergency affecting the whole world.

She added that they are currently conducting statistics and surveys in the neighborhoods of Hargeisa to identify vulnerable people, who need urgent care and support from the government.

“Given the nature of the emergency, the priority is to ensure that we are able to cope with the problem and thus why we’re appealing to local and international aid organizations to assist us so that vulnerable homeless persons are supported and housed into appropriate accommodation during the period, “ She said.

The Minister added that she had raised the issue of how the government and big business can come up with ways to support vulnerable temporary workers and businesses coping with coronavirus challenges since most people are temporary workers who depend on their daily earnings. We have already placed civil servants on leave expect essential staff and have advised all ministerial staff who are sick and whose age is above 60 years old to take an indefinite paid leave.

Finally, the Minister of Employment, Social and Family Affairs urged members of the public to observe the directives issued by the national committee on the preparedness and prevention of COVID=19.
