The Berbera Central Prison has undergone rehabilitation following comprehensive reconstruction, rebuilding and repairs made by the ministry of justice in conjunction with the prisons department.
Both the Justice Minister Hon. Suleiman Warsame Guuled and the Prisons Commander Brigadier General Ahmed Awale Yusuf alias Libaah acknowledge the works done, hence noted that it was the state’s incumbent duties to do them.
The minister pointed out that the government has constantly been seeing to it that the prisons and correctional centers in the country were always well maintained and it has always greatly contributed to the efforts.
Hon. Suleiman observed that, “This is not the first time that we have cooperated with the organizations in such concerted efforts. Such constructions and rehabilitations of the prisons have been severally done in the administration of H.E. President Musa Bihi Abdi”.
He gave various examples such as the Burao prison which the government is funding and the Haleya area prison in Hargeisa which is being completed and is in its final stages.
Brigadier General Ahmed Awale Yusuf (Libax) expressed his elation of witnessing the reconstruction of the central prison in Berbera.
He said, “We came here to fix the prison so that the so that inmates’ shelter could be appropriate and we thank all who put concerted efforts to this cause”.
The dilapidated state of the prison had been dire and calls to address it was rife in recent times.
