In a meeting held today at the Somaliland Ministry of Defence headquarters in Hargeisa, UK Defence Secretary, Hon. Gavin Williamson met with Hon Esse Ahmed Yusuf (Xawar) Minister of Defence and Major General Nuh Thani commander of Somaliland Defence Force to discuss UK – Somaliland cooperation on defence and security issues.
This followed a high-level meeting between H.E. President Muse Bihi Abdi and the visiting UK Defence Secretary Hon. Gavin Williamson.
In a statement issued by Somaliland Ministry of Defence stated as follows:-
The meeting enhanced the longstanding historical partnership between the Republic of Somaliland and the United Kingdom through the announcement of a new mutually beneficial security agreement.
The Minster of Defence added, “The relationship between the United Kingdom and Somaliland is historic and one that we value greatly.
Today we have held discussions with my counterpart the UK Defence Secretary Hon. Gavin Williamson, will help us tackle joint security challenges, benefitting both the UK and Republic of Somaliland and the whole Horn region.
The agreement will significantly boost the defence relationship between the two countries and will further result in improved military capabilities for both sides.
