Somaliland’s Minister of Justice, Mr. Suleiman Warsame Guled, said that Face-to-face social visits will now be suspended in all prisons countrywide, due to current community restrictions.
Speaking to the media, the minister said visits to detainees had been indefinitely suspended to ensure their safety. Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all staff and prisoners remains our central priority. Our priority is to limit the spread of the virus and to protect the lives of those who live and work in our prisons.
The minister said that they are monitoring the situation of the detainees on a daily basis. All prisons have introduced COVID-secure ways of working. Prisons have procedures to manage outbreaks of infectious diseases and are prepared if cases are identified.
He added, “Facilities are available to prisoners, staff and visitors and we have worked closely with suppliers to ensure the supply of soap and cleaning materials
The minister concluded by saying that they have kept the inmates apart to deter the spread disease.
