On 3 February 2016, German Ambassador Jutta Frasch handed over her credentials to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
In her speech, Ambassador Frasch welcomed Somalia’s progress in recent years in building state institutions and initiating reconciliation processes. She underlined the need to build mutual trust between federal and state leaders in order to effectively tackle security challenges in Somalia. On democratization, Ambassador Frasch stressed: “We welcome the decision on an electoral model by the Federal Government of Somalia. It is crucial now to implement in a most transparent and inclusive manner. I am particularly happy that women representation will be doubled in the next parliament.”
In addition, Ambassador Frasch encouraged Somalia and the international community to further step up their efforts in improving living conditions for Somali citizens. Ambassador Frasch promised: “The German Federal Government will continue to stand by the Somali people. I am very happy that we could reach agreement today on programming 47 million Euros for development activities in Somalia.”
Besides the long-term development co-operation, Germany has recently increased its support to the federalisation and state-building process, to the work with disengaged al-Shabaab fighters and is looking into a renewed co-operation with the Somali Police Force.
