Mogadishu, December 5, 2016 – An annual two day Somalia education sector review meeting supported by the EU has closed in Mogadishu today. The meeting which brought together education stakeholders from the Federal Government, Jubaland, Puntland, South-west, Galmudug and the newly formed HirShabelle State has served to review the performance of the sector in 2016 and also to plan for 2017.
“This meeting provide the Federal Ministry of Education with a good opportunity to assess its performance in 2016, and set realistic and achievable goals for subsequent years”, said Dr. Abdulkadir Abdi Hashi, Minister for Education, Culture and Higher Education. “The Action Plan from this meeting will go a long way towards ensuring a strong and vibrant education sector for Somalia”.
The education sector in Somalia has evolved over the years recording significant growth both in infrastructure and capacity to better manage and coordinate education services in Somalia. The Somali Compact has also laid a strong foundation for building a reliable, transparent, accountable and functioning education sector in Somalia.
“An educated Somali society will be better placed to help forge the future they desire while providing the necessary manpower the country needs to grow and develop in a post-conflict set up. This is why the EU has hugely invested in education in Somalia and continues to support the government’s efforts to expand education opportunities for Somali children across the country”, EU Ambassador to Somalia, Ms. Veronique Lorenzo said.
“This two-day workshop was a good platform to addresses critical educational issue that prevent Somali children from accessing good quality education. We have discussed the ways of working towards the realization of the education policies and programmes which are inclusive and relevant to the education needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups”, said the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Culture & Higher Education of the Federal Government Mr. Ahmed Hassen Yussuf.
