A cleric who claimed to cure COVID-19 infected patients in Puntland is facing prosecution for what authorities said amounted to misleading the public.
The prosecutor’s office said Wednesday it is opening investigation with a view to charging the preacher identified as Sheikh Rusheeye. The cleric recently posted content on social media claiming he can heal people infected with COVID-19 through the Quran.
Police said the cleric who has a history of praying for demon-possessed people was causing confusion and extorting the public using religion. The cleric had recently traveled to Somaliland.
There have been numerous personalities among them politicians, preachers, and individuals from various countries claiming to have a solution to COVID-19. Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said last month COVID-19 could be treated using a glass of vodka and sauna.
